| La Garita Wilderness Area
“The wilderness,” as we call it, is our home away from home. There is nothing more pure and pristine than a wilderness area and, at 10,000 feet above sea level, La Garita sets the bar.
We provide a complete pack string of horses to transport you, your equipment and, hopefully, your bull to or from camp. Although, we use horses every hunt, you should be prepared to do some challenging hikes, especially if you are on an archery hunt.
We have two camps set up every year and operate in one or the other. This allows us to move freely between camps if necessary to follow the ever-changing elk herds. The “upper” camp, where archery and muzzle loader hunts begin, is a beautiful 5.5-mile horseback journey along the Middle Fork of the Saguache Creek. We operate our rifle hunts from the “lower” camp, which is a quick one-mile hike from the trailhead. We have a complete camp set up including large tents, cots, wood stoves, a dining tent, etc. We even pack in a propane-heated shower. |
